Derby Porcelain Figure Of Diana With A Hunting Dog, Patch Period C.1760–1765

Artist: Derby

A finely modelled 18th-century Derby porcelain figure representing Diana, the classical goddess of the hunt, accompanied by a greyhound. Executed in soft-paste porcelain and decorated with coloured enamels and gilding, the figure stands on a rococo base with applied flowers and foliage.

Diana is shown holding a long bow while reaching towards the quiver of arrows at her back, with the hound seated attentively at her side. The composition reflects classical representations of the Roman goddess of the chase and became a popular subject in early English porcelain.

The model corresponds to that recorded by Peter Bradshaw as model D27, later reissued during the Patch period as model E50. Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
