Antique Chinese Blue And White Ko-sometsuke Dish For The Japanese Market, Early 17th Century

Chinese blue and white porcelain square dish, made for the Japanese market, known as ko-sometsuke (古染付), dating from the late Ming dynasty, Tianqi period (circa 1621–1627).

This small square dish is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a bold central Shòu (寿) longevity character, framed by a geometric border and animated motifs to the cavetto, typical of ko-sometsuke wares produced specifically for Japan. The freely painted decoration, slightly uneven cobalt tones and softly toned glaze are all characteristic of early 17th-century Chinese export porcelain made to suit Japanese taste.

Ko-sometsuke wares were highly appreciated in Japan for use in kaiseki dining and tea-related contexts, valued for their spontaneity, asymmetry and expressive designs, which contrast with more formal Chinese domestic porcelains of the same period.

Diameter: 9.7 cm.

Good condition overall, with a very small chip to the foot rim, consistent with age and use.
