Bronze with a brown/red patina (common on Ogura pieces). Very good condition - 7 kilos. The term hippogriff comes from the Italian ippogrifo used by Ariosto (Orlando Furioso) in 1516. It derives from the Greek híppos, horse, and the Latin gryphus, griffin. He was born from the mating of a griffin and a mare. -- The sculptor: Graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1908. In 1920, he moved to Paris and studied under Rodin. -- Upon returning to Japan in 1923, he founded the Sculpture Institute and taught French art to younger generations. -- In 1926, he helped organize the Expressionist Art exhibition, the only one of its kind held in Japan. -- In 1937, he was one of the organizers of the Pan-Pacific Exposition (an exhibition against the war in Manchuria). -- In 1945, after the war, he returned to his hometown and became director of the industrial arts high school. He received dozens of awards and held numerous solo exhibitions. A certificate and an illustrated catalogue will be provided to the buyer.
