Antique Korean Joseon Katade-type Celadon Teabowl Chawan C16th–17th

Antique Katade-type teabowl (katade chawan) from Korea, dating to the Joseon Dynasty, 16th–17th century.

Thrown in a buff stoneware body and covered in a green-tinged celadon glaze with an attractive, even crackle. The interior is decorated with subtle carved / incised foliate motifs just visible beneath the glaze when the bowl is turned to the light. The glaze pools slightly in places and shows specks and firing marks typical of Korean kilns of the period.

The profile is that of a classic tea bowl: a deep rounded body with slightly everted rim and a high, straight footring. The rough, unglazed foot with its sandy texture is characteristic of Joseon wares that were later prized in Japan and classified in the tea ceremony as Katade chawan.

Condition: Good condition for age. One tiny rim chip (see photos). Typical firing flaws, pinholes, iron specks and overall crackle to the glaze, all consistent with kiln manufacture and use.
