Antique Thai Manuscript Painting Of Six Thewada, Rattanakosin Period.
An attractive antique Thai manuscript painting depicting six kneeling Thewada (celestial beings) arranged in two registers against a rich red ground. Each figure is shown in a gesture of reverence with hands joined in prayer, wearing elaborate gilded costumes and tall ceremonial crowns characteristic of traditional Thai Buddhist art.
Executed in gold and colours on paper, this work was almost certainly originally part of a Samut Khoi folding manuscript. The visible horizontal fold across the centre is consistent with the construction of traditional Thai accordion-fold books used for religious and literary texts.
The composition displays the refined decorative style associated with the Rattanakosin period, with elegant facial features, finely detailed costumes and a striking use of gold against a vibrant red background. Such manuscript paintings were created to accompany Buddhist texts and served both devotional and artistic purposes. Today, surviving examples are appreciated both for their historical importance and their decorative appeal.
Thailand, Rattanakosin Period, 19th century or earlier.
Image size: 26 x 19 cm.
Presented in a later frame and behind glass. The painting has not been examined out of the frame. Good condition with age-related wear, minor losses and creasing consistent with its age and original use.
