Antique French Bronze Bacchante & Panther, Théodore Gechter, 19th-century Bacchus, Wine, Grapes

An antique French bronze sculpture depicting a Bacchante with a recumbent panther, by Jean-François-Théodore Gechter (1795–1844), dating from the first half of the 19th century.

The young Bacchante leans pensively against a tree trunk, holding a large bunch of grapes. Her long hair is ornamented with vine leaves and further clusters of grapes, while drapery falls loosely around her hips.

At her feet is a recumbent panther, its powerful body curled around the base of the tree. The animal raises its head and growls ferociously, its open mouth revealing its teeth. The panther, grapes and vine leaves are traditional attributes of Bacchus or Dionysus.

Signed on the base “TH. GECHTER”.

Jean-François-Théodore Gechter was an important French Romantic sculptor who studied under François-Joseph Bosio and Baron Gros. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1837.
