Antique Thai Bronze Seated Buddha, Earth-touching Gesture, 18th Century Or Earlier

A fine antique Thai bronze figure of the Buddha, seated in meditation with the legs folded and the right hand extended in the earth-touching gesture (bhumisparsha mudra), calling the earth to witness his Enlightenment.

The Buddha sits on a simple rounded base, wearing the monastic robe (sanghati) falling over the left shoulder in a single sharp fold. The head is covered with tight curls rising to a high conical ushnisha surmounted by a flame finial, typical of Thai sculpture. The face is serene and contemplative, with downcast eyes, arched brows, and elongated ears.

Dark brown to almost black patina with lighter encrustation to the curls of the hair and natural wear on the high points. The base is open and shows old accretions and copper corrosion consistent with age and long devotional use.

Thailand, late Ayutthaya to early Rattanakosin period, 18th century or earlier.

Height: 19.5 cm.

Good condition with age-related surface wear, minor casting flaws and small knocks to the edges of the base, but no apparent major losses, cracks or repairs.
