Antique Thai Bronze Khan Nam Matr Ritual Buddhist Holy Water Vessel

A striking antique Thai Buddhist ritual holy water vessel known as a Khan Nam Matr, cast in bronze and dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The rounded body is extensively decorated in relief with numerous small seated figures of the Buddha, Buddhist emblems and protective Naga serpents. A series of prominent wing- or flame-shaped Naga elements encircles the vessel, giving it a particularly sculptural and imposing appearance.

The domed removable cover is similarly decorated with repeated Buddha figures and is surmounted by a finely modelled seated Buddha sheltered beneath the spreading hoods of a multi-headed Naga.

Unusually, a further image of the Buddha is cast inside the vessel, in the interior where the holy water would have been placed.

The vessel stands upon an ornate flared pedestal foot decorated with further Buddhist imagery. The bronze retains an attractive, naturally aged dark patina.

An impressive and highly decorative example of traditional Thai Buddhist ritual metalwork.
