Chinese Canton Enamel On Copper Vessel, Qing Dynasty, Late 18th Century

A finely decorated Chinese Canton enamel vessel dating to the late 18th century. Made from a thin copper body and painted with brightly coloured enamels, it reflects the sophisticated Canton painted enamel tradition of the Qing dynasty.

The vessel has a cylindrical body, gently expanding foot and scalloped rim. Two large cartouche-shaped reserves depict scenes from everyday life in imperial China, with figures shown among pavilions and garden architecture. The panels are painted in the famille rose palette and set against a deep sapphire-blue ground enriched with floral and geometric ornament.

The main figurative panels remain remarkably well preserved. Facial features, costume details and fine painted elements remain clearly visible despite enamel losses and surface wear elsewhere on the vessel. Canton painted enamels were created by applying coloured enamels onto a prepared white enamel ground over copper, allowing a level of pictorial detail close to miniature painting.

A decorative and collectable late 18th-century Chinese enamel vessel with strong visual presence and well-preserved narrative scenes.
