Jambupati Buddha, Bronze, Shan, Burma, 19th Century.
Buddha Jambupati, i.e. the crowned Buddha. The right hand touching the ground represents the gesture of Bhumisparsha mudra (gesture of attestation or calling upon the earth as witness). It symbolizes the moment of Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The tall, pointed crown (unhisa transformed into a high coronation), rich necklaces and characteristic "wings" or flames emerging from the arms/behind the ears are typical of Burmese iconography.
