Pair Of Lions - Candlesticks, Emile Gallé, Earthenware, Saint-clément Manufactory, Late 19th Century.

Artist: Emile Gallé
Pair of hand-painted and glazed earthenware lions - candlesticks. The majestic lions hold the base of the candlesticks in their hands, which resembles a medieval tower and is covered on the front by the coat of arms of Lorraine.

Height 35 cm and 34.5 cm.

Emile Gallé (1846-1904), earthenware, Saint-Clément Manufactory, late 19th century. Signed: "EG Nancy" with a Lorraine cross.

Good condition, visible rubbing of the glaze.

Émile Gallé's manufactory was renowned for its production of first-rate furniture and glassware. However, before creating his famous furniture and glass objects, Gallé was involved in the design of earthenware, first at the Saint-Clément manufactory and later at his own. Emile Gallé enjoyed walks in wild woods and had his own small botanical garden. He hung signs above his workshop door: "Our roots are deep in the forest, by the streams and among the moss."
