Keman made of bronze and copper alloy, formerly gilded.
Karyobinga and Mon of the Tokugawa. Japan, 19th century or possibly earlier.
A copper-plated bronze Keman, cut, cast, and mercury-gilded, with some traces of gilding remaining.
Decorated with lotus and peony flowers, symbols of good fortune and longevity.
Keman are hung in Japanese temples as a substitute for flower bouquets.
Everything is symbolic, including the central knot in high relief. Superb, extremely fine chasing work. Usually, Keman are decorated only with flowers. Very fine chasing, some traces of gilding. Japan, 19th century or possibly earlier. Good overall condition.
The bells that were suspended from the small decorated rings are missing; three ornaments remain.
