This Burmese image of the historic Buddha, Shakyamuni, makes a gesture known as bhumisparsha-mudra, or "taking the earth to witness." It was made in bronze, with lost wax and dates from the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century. Provenance: Estate of collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau.
