Gilded Bronze Buddha, Thailand, 19th Century
A lacquered and gilded bronze Buddha in royal attire from the Rattanakosin period, mid-19th century, Thailand. The Buddha is in the bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. Seated in the lotus position, with one hand resting in meditation on his knee and the other extended above his knee to touch the ground, this gesture commemorates the moment the Buddha attained enlightenment. The Buddha is dressed in elaborate robes adorned with high-relief floral and foliate motifs. Over his robes, he wears the regalia of Thai kings, including a heavy cape, diamond-shaped breastplates, and a winged crown, all decorated with high-relief studded designs that mimic heavy embroidery. A tall, narrow, arrow-shaped finial surmounts the ushnisha that rises from the top of his head. The Buddha sits on a tall, stylized double-lotus pedestal, atop a trapezoidal base, all decorated with relief motifs. The fine gold gilding is still very much in place on the entire statue. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the presence and vision of this Buddha bring calm and serenity to any interior décor. Careful packaging and tracked shipping. France: €15, Worldwide: €20.
