Bodhisattva Manjushri In Bronze, Java
Javanese bronze most likely representing the bodhisattva Manjushri, Indonesia, Java, 9th century. In Javanese iconography, the crescent located behind his head is typical, especially for Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri, a comparable Javanese example in stone is kept at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He wears his double sacred chain, crossed on his bust and of course, the Prajñāpāramitā sutra placed on his lotus. Beautiful green patina, with remaining gilding on the face and on the crescent.
