Antique Tuareg Wooden Miniature Coffer With Solid Silver Mounts
A small antique Tuareg wooden casket with engraved solid silver mounts, originating from the Saharan regions of North Africa and dating to the late 19th century or the first half of the 20th century.
The rectangular box is constructed from dark hardwood and is decorated with finely engraved solid silver plates applied to the lid, corners, and sides. The lid is adorned with a striking geometric composition forming a cross-like design, surrounded by triangular motifs, dotted punch decoration, and engraved zig-zag borders characteristic of Tuareg metalwork.
Such abstract geometric ornamentation is typical of Tuareg craftsmanship and reflects traditional Saharan decorative language, where symbols relating to protection, travel, and the four directions of the world frequently appear in silver jewellery and personal objects.
The box retains its original rotating clasp and silver-mounted corner fittings. The interior is plain wood, intended for storing personal valuables such as jewellery, amulets, or other small possessions.
Width: 10.5 cm.
Good condition.
