Water Pipe (huqqa) In Gilded Copper And Cut Crystal. India 19th Century Or Earlier.
The water pipe has a very heavy base (3.5kg), made of either crystal or glass, in the shape of an Islamic turban and deeply carved below with a star motif. The upper part, which appears to have been reassembled upside down, is made of embossed and chased copper, covered with a thick mercury gilding. The thickness of the gilding is such that nowhere, despite use, does it reveal the copper base. The decoration features stylized flowers on a chiselled amatis background. This is probably Indian work from a Muslim region, made in the 19th century or earlier. Dimensions: 25 x 13cm Weight: 3.5kg.
