Carved Wooden Mask. Japan, 19th Century. Meiji Period.
Artist: No
The mask is carved from a single piece of very light wood, covered with gofun (oyster shell powder and animal glues) and pigments coloring the face "au naturel". The face represented belongs to a jovial and benevolent character. The eyes are made of glass for a realistic effect. This type of mask was hung on the wall of Japanese houses either to ward off bad spells, or to chase away demons, or to attract joy and happiness as here. During the Meiji period, at the end of the 19th century, Western travelers brought back a large number of them. Japan, 19th century. 195x150x70mm Some gofun skips, some old restorations, all visible in the photos.
