Pair Of Bronze Andirons. Rivers And Streams. Louis XIV Period.
Artist: Baptiste Tuby
Pair of bronze fireplaces. Rivers and Streams. Louis XIV period. The sculptures depict a bearded man and a woman, both reclining in the Roman style, leaning on a jar from which water flows and holding an oar. This is a representation of a river and a stream, a popular subject at this time, which can be found in the gardens of Versailles in the form of colossal statues created by Baptiste Tuby around 1680. The andirons are complete with their original, solidly forged irons. Beautiful antique patina, very expressive figures. The bases are richly decorated. France, late 17th or early 18th century.
