Cast And Lacquered Bronze Bell. Japan, Edo Period, 18th-19th Century.
Cast and lacquered bronze bell. Japan, Edo period, 18th-19th century. The bell is made of bronze cast using the lost-wax method, its surface entirely covered with Urushi lacquer. Its small size suggests it was a domestic bell for Shinto or Buddhist religious services. It is decorated with stylized motifs: flowers, waves, and dragons, typical of Japan. Two Chinese characters molded in relief are visible at the bottom of the bell; they can be translated as "sound of the bell." Japan, Edo period, 18th or 19th century. Height: 18 cm.
