Porcelain Covered Bowl. Ho-ho Decoration, Imari Style. Japan Arita Circa 1700.

The bowl is in turned porcelain, covered and rests on three feet. On the sides are two geometric handles. A Buddhist lion (shishi) serves as a gripping knob, and three dragon heads support the whole. The decoration is in cobalt blue and red enamel with gold details, in the Imari style. A Phoenix (Ho-Ho) is depicted in reserves surrounded by flowers. Body and lid in good condition, no cracks or chips. One foot glued back. Shishi held by an iron tenon. Dimensions: 16 x 12cm. Japan circa 1680-1720, Arita kilns. In Oliver Impey's "Porcelain for Palace", a saucer with similar decoration by Hoho (n°242) from the same period is illustrated. This is a very rare model.
