Dignitary And Attendant Pair, Opium School, Canton, 19th-century French Concession, Imperial China

Chinese painting from the Canton School (French Concession, 1859–1949) during the Imperial era of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Two gouaches on rice paper depicting a couple of dignitaries intheir apartment, each with a servant presenting them with a pipe used forsmoking opium. The painting, executed in fine lines, is refined and richly detailed. The paintings areprotected by glass, which creates reflections and causes the colors to appearsubdued in some photos.Another painting visible in the last photos depicts an elderly man waitingfor his opium pipe as well and included free of charge with the couple (the painting was likely doneby the same artist but is slightly different in terms of the floor and walls…). Ingood overall condition, with a few age-related imperfections that can be restored (depending on personal preference) and smallbrown stains… SHIPPING AVAILABLE, carefullyreinforced packaging, sent by registered mail with signature confirmation, insurance, and online tracking via itstracking number (flat-rate shipping fee).SAONE ANTIQUITES Store149 rue de la Levée 01750 ST LAURENT SUR SAONE, 500 meters from MACON (71000)Open Tuesday through Saturday 3:00 PM–7:00 PM and mornings 10:30 AM–12:30 PM.If you’re coming fromfar away, please call or text 0613 21 81 09 beforehand to make sure I’m at thestore and not out on a call (estimate, delivery, family matters, etc.).
