Sculptor Auguste Moreau (1834-1917) “the Child With The Broken Pitcher” Paris.

Artist: Auguste Moreau (1834-1917)
A polychrome cast iron sculpture with two patinas: antique green and brown medallions, depicting a laughing child despite holding a jug with a missing section that leaks its contents. The subject is finely rendered by Auguste Moreau, a member of the renowned and celebrated Moreau family of sculptors from Dijon. This dynasty of sculptors was active in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and the younger brother of sculptors Hippolyte Moreau and Mathurin Moreau, the most famous of whom is Gustave Moreau (many sculptures from this family can be found in various French museums). Auguste Moreau was active from 1861 to 1906 and was a student of Mathurin Moreau. He was a sculptor who produced almost exclusively bronzes, featuring genre scenes, pastoral scenes, and allegories in a realistic and graceful style. These works could also be used to decorate clocks, candelabras, and light fixtures. The sculpture is signed on the base. The piece is in good condition. For those interested in Moreau's work, another large bronze sculpture, "Allegory of Spring," depicting a young girl and child, also by Auguste Moreau, is available in my online shop.
