"Large Japanese Imari Oval Jardinieres – Matched Pair, Meiji C.1880, Arita"
A superb pair of large Japanese Imari porcelain
jardinieres, Meiji period, circa 1880. Each vessel is robustly potted in an
elegant oval form and hand-painted in the traditional Imari palette of
underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and green enamel. The decoration features
blossoming trees, garden fences, and stylized floral reserves, all executed
with fine, lively brushwork. The painting is entirely hand-done, reflecting the
best traditions of Meiji period Imari ware. Both jardinieres
are unmarked, as is typical for large pieces of this type. Likely produced in
the Arita region, Saga province, the historical center of Japanese Imari
porcelain since the 17th century. Finding a matched pair in such excellent
condition is highly unusual — these jardinieres are a true collector’s rarity,
suitable for display in a refined interior or as decorative planters for
orchids, bonsai, or seasonal arrangements.
