Russian Papier-mâché Lacquer Cigarette Case Attributed To Vishnyakov, C.1850-1870

Artist: Vishnyakov

A finely preserved Russian papier-mâché lacquer cigarette case attributed to the renowned Vishnyakov workshop and dating from the mid-19th century. The lid is decorated with a beautifully hand-painted Russian Winter Troika executed in the traditional over-the-gold technique (pismo po skvoznomu), producing the rich luminous effect characteristic of the finest Russian lacquer miniatures.

The dynamic composition, inspired by Russian folklore and traditional lubok imagery, is complemented by a well-made book-form construction with a recessed brass piano hinge. The principal painted miniature retains exceptional originality, while UV examination confirmed the absence of later overpainting, restoration or concealed cracks within the painted scene.

The Vishnyakov manufactory ranked among the foremost Russian producers of lacquer miniatures during the 19th century and received numerous medals and awards at national exhibitions. Combining artistic quality, attractive attribution and remarkable preservation, this is a scarce collector's piece of Imperial Russian decorative art.

Dimensions:

  • Weight 100 g. Height 2.6 cm. Length 10 cm. Width 8.9 cm

Condition:

The principal painted miniature is in excellent condition, with only minimal age-related specks and exceptional preservation of the original lacquer and gilding. UV examination revealed no overpainting, restoration or cracks within the principal painted image. The original cinnabar-red interior remains in very good condition, with minor age-related cracks along the inner edge. The reverse retains its original black lacquer with slight varnish darkening, while the metal components show oxidation. The spring-loaded catch remains in perfect working order, opening and closing with a sharp, crisp click.
