"Rare 18th Century Silver Snuffbox With Hot Air Balloon Decoration "
Rare solid silver pocket snuffbox with an engraved hot air balloon decoration. The very clear hallmarks struck on the bottom and on the lid indicate the year 1783 and the well-identified master silversmith. Jean François Poisson, active in Paris between 1775 and 1806. He worked on Rue des Mauvaises Paroles (!!!), under the name of "La Tabatiere". It was precisely in 1783 that the first hot air balloon ascent took place, a resounding event which considerably influenced the decorative repertoire. This snuffbox is a good example. The engraved decoration is very slightly worn but remains completely legible. The hallmarks are very clear. Dimensions: 6cm by 3.6cm and 2.1cm high. Hinge in perfect condition.
