Rare collector’s snuffbox in antique green serpentine, lined in 18k gold, featuring a superb Roman micromosaic depicting a dramatic scene of a panther attacking a young goat, set in an idyllic pastoral landscape.
The work, composed of ultra-fine glass tesserae, can be attributed to the circle of Filippo Puglieschi or Vincenzo Aguatti, among the most skilled micromosaic artists active in Rome between the late 1700s and early 1800s. The exceptional execution, painterly detail and emotional intensity reflect the golden age of Roman micromosaics created for Grand Tour collectors.
