Micromosaic in vitreous paste on veined alabaster support
Dimensions: 23 × 14 × 2.5 cm
Refined rectangular micromosaic plaque depicting two winged putti riding galloping black goats, set against a narrow strip of grassy ground. The figures, animated and full of vitality, hold small sticks or whips, suggesting a playful or mythological scene inspired by the classical world. The background is composed of tightly arranged ivory tesserae, framed by a dark red mosaic border, all set into a warm-toned veined alabaster slab.
The meticulous execution, using extremely fine filati tesserae, is characteristic of the high-quality Roman production made for Grand Tour collectors. The work may be attributed to the circle of Antonio Aguatti or similar Roman mosaicists active between 1820 and 1850.
Excellent condition. The micromosaic is complete and undamaged, with minor wear consistent with age.
