French Architect’s Technical Desk In Empire Style
France, first quarter of the 19th century (ca. 1810–1830)
Mahogany and mahogany veneer, ormolu mounts, pull-out elements, tilting top
Elegant technical desk for architects, crafted in solid mahogany and figured mahogany veneer, enriched with finely cast and gilded bronze mounts, typical of French Empire or Restoration production.
The rectangular structure rests on four tapering fluted legs with gilt-bronze ornaments. The top is adjustable and can be tilted through an internal ratchet mechanism, making it ideal for architectural drawing or reading.
The front includes a central drawer and two pull-out lateral leaves, designed to provide additional work surfaces. The apron is decorated with light wood inlays and classic-style ormolu motifs.
Known in French as table à dessiner, this type of desk is a rare and refined example of early 19th-century technical furniture, where practical function meets neoclassical elegance.
