18th Century Boxwood Novelty Snuff Box Of A Comical Monkey/dog
An 18th-century French boxwood novelty snuff box of a comical monkey-dog, with a brass collar and glass eyes. The tongue is metal, similar to the tooth of comb from a music box.
10cm (4in) long
7.5cm (3in) High
Comical animal snuff boxes of this kind are the rarest of the rare and this one is almost certainly unique. It has an unusual mechanism for opening (please see images). The longer section of the base swivels away, allowing the shorter section to be pushed forward, releasing it from a tongue and groove key. The whole of the base then swivels to reveal the interior.
