Carved Ivory Depiction Of The Dead Christ – Germany, Late 18th – Early 19th Century

An exquisite sculpture in natural ivory depicting the dead Christ, lying on the shroud after the Deposition, likely created in southern Germany between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The work stands out for the elegance of its modeling and the quality of its carving, featuring harmonious anatomy, a face with an intense and contemplative expression, closed eyes, long wavy hair, and a finely chiseled beard. The drapery beneath is carved with great skill, lending depth and movement to the composition. The ivory has a pleasing natural patina and the usual slight cracks resulting from the material’s natural aging process—characteristics typical of antique ivory. On the back, traces of hand carving are visible, along with an antique wax seal, evidence of a previous ownership in a collection.
