Micromosaic on metal plaque
This refined micromosaic depiction of the Immaculate Conception, set on a metal support, perfectly reflects the grace and elegance of the late 16th-century Emilian painting tradition, especially that of the Carracci. The Virgin Mary, draped in a celestial blue mantle and crowned with twelve stars, is shown triumphing over the serpent — symbol of original sin.
Dating from the 18th century, the work reveals exceptional technical skill in the placement of minute colored glass tesserae, typical of early Roman micromosaic production, which closely imitated devotional painting models of the time.
