Large Polychrome Relief Majolica Plaque, Sicily (caltagirone?), 17th Century
Striking glazed and relief-moulded majolica plaque depicting the Ascension of Christ, framed within a rich triumphal arch architecture adorned with caryatids and flanking angels. At the center, the Virgin and the Apostles are shown in adoration, gazing upward at the ascending Christ, whose feet alone are visible amid the clouds—a common motif in popular religious iconography. The vibrant glazes—blue, green, yellow, and manganese brown—are characteristic of Sicilian devotional majolica of the 17th century, most likely from Caltagirone, a prominent ceramic production center on the island. This piece was probably intended for a private chapel, rural oratory, or a wall-mounted shrine for devotional use.
