Italy, second half of the 19th century
Elegant monumental fireplace in white Carrara marble, richly decorated with polychrome stone inlays in a neo-Cosmatesque style. The piece faithfully revives the medieval Roman mosaic tradition, reinterpreted within the historicist spirit of the 19th century.
The architectural design is sober and well-proportioned, with smooth vertical jambs and a projecting entablature with molded cornices. The surface is embellished with refined geometric inlays in polychrome marbles — such as red porphyry, green serpentine, and yellow Siena — arranged in typical Cosmatesque patterns: lozenges, alternating triangles, eight-pointed stars, and zigzag borders.
This fireplace is a rare example of neo-medieval revival applied to domestic furnishings, likely commissioned by a cultured patron for a prestigious interior. The exquisite craftsmanship and the harmonious color scheme reflect the high level of skill achieved by 19th-century Italian artisans in reviving the Roman art of marble inlay.
