The Judgment Of Paris
Attributed to Pietro Benvenuti (Arezzo, 1769 – Florence, 1844)
This painting depicts the celebrated mythological episode of The Judgment of Paris, rendered with neoclassical refinement and attributed to Pietro Benvenuti, the foremost interpreter of Tuscan Neoclassicism. On the right, Paris sits beneath a tree, draped in a red cloth and wearing a Phrygian cap, as he contemplates the golden apple destined for the “fairest” goddess.
Before him stand the three divinities: Minerva, holding a spear with her helmet set aside; Juno, shown from behind in noble nudity beside her scepter and shield; and Venus, at the center, who with a graceful gesture seems to claim the prize. The clear outlines, polished bodies, and flowing drapery reveal adherence to classical models and the legacy of Jacques-Louis David, enriched by the elegance of the Florentine school.
The landscape background, with rocks, trees, and distant mountains, frames the scene as an ideal stage, where myth and classical beauty merge into a solemn and luminous vision of early nineteenth-century Neoclassicism.
