French School, late 18th century, oil on canvas depicting a trompe-l'œil bas-relief of a lively bacchanalian scene with putti. In good overall condition, relined, with minor old repairs. Presented in a later molded and giltwood frame. Bibliography: Piat Joseph Sauvage (1748-1818) excelled in this type of painting inspired by the 1748 excavations of Pompeii. Often set in wood paneling, these works illustrate the Neoclassical taste of the period. Length 62cm x 52cm. Canvas 51cm x 41cm.
