Magnificent pair of Chinese ivory figures, depicting a male and a female character carved in the round with extraordinary finesse. The models draw direct inspiration from the late Qing dynasty aesthetic, with idealized features, ceremonial garments, and auspicious symbols.
The male figure, likely a sage or Daoist immortal, holds a staff and blooming peonies—symbols of long life, honor, and prosperity. A book near his feet alludes to wisdom and culture. The graceful female figure, with floral basket and lotus blossom, recalls traditional depictions of He Xiangu, the only female among the Eight Immortals.
The ivory surfaces show a rich natural patina, with fine incised floral medallions and workshop markings on the underside—hallmarks of late 19th-century Chinese export craftsmanship for the elite European market.
