Inkwell In Verde Alpi Marble And Gilt Bronze, Empire Period (early 19th Century)
Elegant desk inkwell crafted in Verde Alpi marble with finely chased gilt bronze mounts. The structure consists of a rectangular base with sharp edges, resting on four turned feet in the same marble.
The front is adorned with a refined gilt bronze plaque featuring neoclassical motifs: a central floral wreath flanked by oak and laurel branches, symbols of strength and glory.
The upper section includes two circular inkwell pots in gilt bronze with glass liners, their lids decorated with acanthus leaves and topped with twisted ring handles. At the center, a square casket with a pyramidal lid serves as a sander or small storage box; its surfaces are embellished with classical motifs of palmettes and rosettes, highlighting the period’s taste for sober monumentality inspired by ancient Rome.
A longitudinal groove at the front is designed to hold the pen, completing the functionality of the piece.
The choice of materials — the richly veined Verde Alpi marble, symbol of prestige, combined with finely worked gilt bronze — perfectly embodies the Empire style, marked by austerity, symmetry, and the use of classical symbolism.
This inkwell belongs to the category of refined desk furnishings, created for high-ranking individuals or official settings, where utility was combined with strong representational value.
