France, second half of the 19th century
Elegant pair of French cabinets in the Boulle style, crafted in ebonized wood and richly adorned with finely chiseled gilt and patinated bronze mounts. Each piece features a single door with a symmetrical, classically inspired structure, typical of the historicist production of the Second Empire.
At the center of each door is a large oval plaque in patinated bronze, framed by an ornate gilt bronze surround with classical motifs including garlands, ribbons, and acanthus leaves. The plaques depict mythological or pastoral scenes in high relief, with reclining female figures and flying cherubs.
Above, a horizontal oval bronze panel shows a classical procession in low relief — including horsemen, nymphs, and dynamic figures — likely inspired by Renaissance or antique models. The whole is enriched by acanthus corner mounts, gilt fillets, bronze moldings, and a top in shaped white marble.
These pieces are exceptional examples of French 19th-century decorative arts, blending neoclassical inspiration with opulent Second Empire aesthetics.
