Circle of Alessandro Algardi (Bologna 1598 – Rome 1654)
Rome, second half of the 17th century
Gilt bronze, red marble base and Fior di Pesco marble column
Overall height: approx. 35–40 cm
Finely cast gilt bronze depicting Christ bound to the column, following a devotional iconography widely popular in Baroque Rome. Executed using the lost-wax method and finished with a fire gilding that remains remarkably well preserved, the figure displays a gentle twist of the torso, downcast eyes and a composed yet sorrowful expression. The elegant treatment of anatomy and drapery strongly recalls the style of Alessandro Algardi, renowned for his sober and classical approach, in contrast to Bernini’s dynamism. The refined modeling, combined with the use of fine marbles, points to a Roman production from the second half of the 17th century, likely from Algardi’s immediate circle or a workshop influenced by his models.
