Carved Ivory Plaque With Winged Cherubs And A Heron; Germany, Second Half Of The 19th Century
An elegant rectangular plaque carved in high relief from ivory, depicting two winged cherubs set against a naturalistic landscape. One of the cherubs is shown playing a flute, facing an elegant heron, while the other watches the scene with a playful expression. The work stands out for the quality of its carving, evident in the soft anatomical rendering of the cherubs, the fine craftsmanship of the wings, the heron’s plumage, and the marsh vegetation. The background features a landscape with a tree, reeds, and flowers, executed with great decorative attention to detail. Probably of German origin, it reflects the naturalistic style of the Erbach region in the 19th century.
