Corpus Christi Made Of Boxwood, On A Gilded Wooden Cross, France, 18th Century

Object of devotion: Corpus Christi on the cross.
Carved from boxwood in a folk style, this Christ is depicted in agony as he breathes his last. His short perizonium, tied on the left; his arms raised to form a narrow V; the arch of his body; and the contrapposto are strong indicators pointing to an 18th-century date, as this stylization is characteristic of 18th-century Baroque art. The cross, made of gilded wood with radiating spokes, is in very fine condition. Its carved ends, its construction, and the manner in which the gilding was applied are also indicators of an 18th-century date. This object was therefore originally intended for private devotion.
