Austria, Late 19th Century: Bernhard Bloch (1836–1909), Pair Of Ceramic Plates, Brittany, Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau: Pair of ceramic plaques featuring a Breton man and a Breton woman in bas-relief. “BB” stamp on the back, for Bernhard Bloch (1836–1909). Austria, circa 1900. In nearly perfect condition; a few chips are visible on the reverse sides.

Although Austrian, these two plates depict Bretons! At the bottom of each is an inscription: “Loup de mer” and “Bretagne.” The two figures are depicted in bas-relief at the center, set within the ceramic as if in an alcove. The borders of these pieces are typical of the Art Nouveau style, nearly symmetrical and decorated with climbing plants and flowers. Although presented on a green background, a subtle golden polychrome embellishes these naturalistic forms.

Both figures are depicted seated, facing forward, and smoking pipes! Their traditional clothing features shades of blue, purple, and light brown. These color choices create a striking contrast with the green background. The delicacy of their hands and facial features, their gaze, and their complexion bring them fully to life. They seem to be right here among us, ready to tell us stories of storms! Personally, I really appreciate the cord cinching this sea dog’s waist, as well as his very, very thick beard!

On the back, there is a wealth of information. On both plaques, the word “Imported” is engraved into the ceramic at the bottom, followed by “Imported from Austria” painted in the center. Next comes the famous “BB” stamp, well known to all Art Nouveau ceramics enthusiasts, standing for Bernhard Bloch (1836–1909), one of the greats of Jugendstil ceramics in Austria-Hungary at the turn of the century. He is known for his particularly prized Orientalist works, but equally for his varied repertoire ranging from works of art to utilitarian objects (such as a tobacco jar). Finally, the numbers corresponding to the model or design are engraved into the ceramic: “5373” for the plaque depicting the Breton woman, “5374” for this sea wolf.
