"Garuda, Polychrome Wood, Bali, Indonesia"
Garuda, in all its splendor as a vahana of Vishnu, in polychrome and lightly gilded wood. Bali, brought back in the 1980s. Imposing in size, simply remove the wings of this mythical bird to reveal a single-piece sculpture. This Garuda, displayed on a beautiful piece of furniture with a light patina, impresses with its menacing posture and piercing gaze. It seems ready to pounce fiercely! The quality of the carving is exceptional; there is no sign of fragility. This is hardly surprising given the talent of Balinese sculptors… That being said, let's turn to what makes a bird a bird: the wings. Numbering four, they are disconcertingly light, the wood is thin (4/5 mm), and their colors are vibrant. The well-detailed feathers add movement to the whole. The wingspan is over 50 centimeters when attached to the body. These are the most fragile parts of this piece, as evidenced by the numerous repairs present on each one. Rare on the market, highly decorative, and in good condition: that's exactly what one could wish for!
