A Lion Fighting A Dragon, Root Sculpture, Indonesia, 20th Century.
A dynamic sculpture depicting a battle scene between two fantastical creatures: a lion with distinctly predatory features and a dragon with an elongated, serpentine body covered in scales. The composition is based on a spiral arrangement of forms, in which the dragon’s body coils around the lion’s silhouette, creating a compact structure full of tension.
The sculpture makes use of the root’s natural form, which gives the piece its irregular and organic character.
Indonesia (Bali?), late 20th century.
Wood (root), hand-carved.
Height: 60 cm, width: 36 cm, depth: 30 cm.
Condition: good.
