" Worcester Blue And White Tea Canister, C.1775"
A fine antique tea canister from the celebrated
Worcester factory, dating to around 1775. Of lobed form with a short neck and
flat shoulders, it is decorated in underglaze blue with the so-called
"Pinecone and Fern" pattern — a less common botanical design used in
Worcester porcelain during the late 18th century. The lid was originally topped
with a small rose-shaped finial, typical of Worcester canisters of this period
The smooth, slightly bluish glaze and crisp cobalt decoration are characteristic
of Worcester's First Period porcelain. The base bears the underglaze blue
crescent mark of the factory.
At the time, tea was an expensive luxury, and such compact canisters
were used to store small but precious amounts of loose leaf tea.
Highly desirable among collectors of early English porcelain, this
canister combines historical authenticity, elegant form, and decorative appeal,
making it a fine example of Worcester’s First Period craftsmanship.
