"Large Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure “the Bather Surprised”, Shot Enamel, 1906"
An important Royal Worcester figure, Model 486 'The Bather Surprised', in the rare Shot Enamel finish. The model was produced from 1875 (one was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878) and is based on the 'Salmacis' sculpture created by Thomas Brock in 1868, modeled and presented to the Royal Academy in 1869; Royal Worcester acquired the original and the reproduction rights in porcelain. Around 1900–1906, the form was reissued with the decorative Shot Enamel finish, giving a refined bronze-gold effect. Impressed mark WORCESTER SHOT ENAMEL. The Shot Enamel technique creates a finely grained texture, like tiny pearls, which enriches the drapery and bases and accentuates the quality of the modeling. Collector's note: Large Worcester Shot Enamel figures are exhibition-grade pieces, rare and highly sought after for their scale, finish, and excellent condition.
