Georgian Staffordshire Jug With Hand Painted Oriental Motifs, Late 18th Century

Artist: Staffordshire

This Staffordshire jug dates from the late 18th century and is made in a sharply faceted hexagonal shape, typical of Georgian-period English ceramics. The overall finish reflects careful workshop production intended for decorative and domestic use.

The surface is decorated with a hand-painted oriental scene showing figures in an imagined Eastern setting, accompanied by floral sprays in the “Indische Blumen” manner. Such decoration illustrates the period’s fascination with exotic imagery before transfer printing became standard.

The base carries an incised technological mark, consistent with common English ceramic practices of the time.

An appealing and collectible piece combining early form and expressive hand painting.

Dimensions: height 21.5 cm; width 21 cm; depth 16 cm.
Weight: 656 g.

Condition: a small chip to the spout, a chip to the footrim, and a fine hairline crack at the base of the handle. In all other respects, in very good antique condition, with the painted decoration particularly well preserved.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them.
