Object description :

"Chinese Export Famille Rose Teapot With Floral Medallions, Early Qianlong Period C. 1740–1760"

A refined Chinese export porcelain teapot dating to the early Qianlong reign (c. 1740–1760). The softly lobed ovoid body is decorated with circular medallions outlined in iron-red enamel, each enclosing a delicately painted famille rose floral bouquet in soft pinks, greens, and aubergine. Around the shoulder runs a pink diaper (trellis) pattern interspersed with scattered flower sprigs, lending lightness and movement to the design. The domed cover mirrors the decoration and retains traces of its original gilding to the knop.

The elegant straight spout, loop handle with ruyi-style spur, and smooth luminous glaze reflect the high standard of Jingdezhen production for the export market in the mid-18th century. Porcelain of this type was once the height of fashion in Europe — treasured by collectors and influential in the development of early British porcelain at Worcester, Bow, and New Hall.

Historical Background
During the Qianlong period (1736–1795), famille rose enamels reached a peak of refinement. Demand for tea drinking in Europe created a flourishing trade in Chinese porcelain designed expressly for Western table settings, often with shapes inspired by European silver. Floral medallion decoration, combining Chinese botanical imagery with Rococo taste, became a signature aesthetic of the era. Today, examples retaining their original lids and strong enamel palette remain highly desirable to collectors of early Chinese export wares.
