Japanese Meiji Satsuma Belt Buckle With Dragon Decoration, C.1900
A decorative Japanese Satsuma belt buckle from the Meiji period, composed of two circular panels painted with dragons and stylised waves on a crackled ivory ground. The decoration is executed in enamel colours and highlighted with gilding.
The surface combines fine gilt linework with raised gold dot decoration, producing a textured effect characteristic of high-quality Satsuma pieces of the late 19th century. The ceramic panels are set into a metal mount forming a working buckle.
Such objects illustrate the adaptation of Japanese decorative techniques to Western forms and were produced both for domestic use and for export markets.
